The Emmy Awards

The Emmy Awards

This Sunday was the Sunday of a major event for television. It was the annual Emmy awards. TV network executives and actors and actresses look forward to this event. Every year the awards show rewards the best in the business.

Of course it’s an honor just to be nominated. But winning also feels good. So, secretly, all the nominees gathered at the event wanted to win.

The awards show brings together the celebrities as well as the not-so-famous of the television entertainment world. While some wins are predictable, others take everybody by surprise. So let’s look at the last weekend’s winners.

TV Shows

The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story dominated the awards show with five wins. The anthology show that airs on FX revisits the trial of O.J. Simpson. The athlete was trialed for murder in a notorious case. The People v. O.J. Simpson took home nearly every award that it was nominated for. It won an award for best limited series. It also won an Emmy for outstanding writing. Actors on the show also won awards for acting. Sterling K. Brown, Courtney B. Vance and Sarah Paulson all took home awards for the roles they play on the show.

The host of the show, Jimmy Kimmel even made a reference regarding the show during one of his moments. While looking at stars from that show he asked “Are you rooting for O.J. to win this time?”. This was a biting remark at the topic of the show and the media attention that the case still elicits.

HBO had two big winners on the night of the awards. Although the wins didn’t come as much of a surprise as they were somewhat expected. Game of Thrones brought a consecutive win for HBO for best drama series. Also, Veep, the show chronicling the adventures of Selina in office, won big. For the second year in a row, the show won best comedy series. So, a good night for HBO, whose shows took best series in the drama and in the comedy category.

Actors and Actresses

The winners for outstanding lead actor and for outstanding lead actress in a drama series were a surprise.

Rami Malek won the award for lead actor for the role he plays on Mr. Robot. He talked about the character that he portrays on the show during his acceptance speech. He said that there is a little bit of Elliot in all of us.

Tatiana Maslany won the award for lead actress for the role she plays on Orphan Black. The show is a clone drama on BBC America where Maslany plays multiple characters. As part of her acceptance speech she wanted to say that she felt lucky to be starring in a show “that puts women at the center”.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus won her eighth Emmy. The star of HBO show Veep, won the award for lead actress in a comedy series for the fifth time in a row. During her acceptance speech, she said that Veep started as political satire, but now it looks like a sobering documentary about the world of politics.
