As President-elect Donald Trump is putting together his team for the future Trump administration, he is receiving criticism for making appointments from a select group only. So far Donald Trump has appointed nationalists and hardline conservatives to key positions like the head of the CIA and chief White House strategist. Critics argued that the next administration is going to be made up of exclusively white men, showing a narrow approach to government. But Donald Trump’s latest nomination shows that the next President of the United States is starting to look outside his close circle of supporters and advisers. The Governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley is going to be the next United States ambassador to the United Nations.
Donald Trump Nominates South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley
With the recent nomination, Donald Trump’s team is starting to look somewhat more diverse. The Republican Governor of South Carolina is the daughter of Indian immigrants. Also, Trump is appointing a woman to a key role regarding foreign policy, after receiving criticism for not making enough room for women on his team. Nikki Haley will be a welcome addition to the national security team that Donald Trump is building. Her being on the team could serve to soften up United States approaches to foreign policy, especially when it comes to dealing with the diplomatic and sometimes bureaucratic forum of the United Nations.
The coming days could see another announcement about the future national security team at the Trump White House. There is strong indication that Donald Trump is considering Mitt Romney for the position of Secretary of State. Another name on the short list for Secretary of State is former Mayor of New York, Rudy Giuliani. A strong supporter of Donald Trump during the presidential campaign, Giuliani is close to the President-elect. So, he is being considered for the position as well. But, Donald Trump could choose to go with Mitt Romney in an attempt to appease the Republican establishment.
Donald Trump Takes a More Moderate Approach
Mitt Romney was a former presidential nominee himself in 2012. As a Republican candidate, he lost to Barack Obama in the election. However, he remained an influential voice in the GOP. Mitt Romney did not support Donald Trump in the primary race. Also, throughout the presidential campaign, he spoke out against some of the comments that Donald Trump was making. He also denounced Trump’s behavior during the “Access Hollywood” audio tape scandal.
Even so, Mitt Romney now finds himself at the top of the list for a key position in the Trump administration. Donald Trump is receiving praise for this approach from some Washington groups that were previously critical of his choices.
Gary Schmitt is a scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, a right-leaning think-tank. He used to be a critic of Donald Trump. In March of this year, he signed on to a letter together with more than 120 other Republican experts in national security. The letter warned against a Trump presidency. Their expert opinion was that it would “make America less safe” and “diminish our standing in the world.”
However, Gary Schmitt is starting to cautiously reconsider his stand on a Trump administration.
“It’s a good step. But it doesn’t actually tell you how the place is going to run, and we won’t know that until we see that in action,”
said Gary Schmitt.
