Radiation from the sun or artificial tanning is one of the leading causes of skin cancer. The most dangerous type is melanoma. The typical symptoms you need to look out for are moles that change their size or color, brown spots, small lesions of light colors that do not heal or dark lesions on your hands, mouth, soles or genital area. Skin cancer is estimated to affect one in five Americans. It is time to be more aware of the possible damage that our beloved sun can cause, if not taken the necessary precaution methods.

One of the most basic things you can do during the sunny months is apply sunscreen. When buying it, look at the sun protection factor. The lighter your skin tone, the higher it should be. A SPF 30 sunscreen would, for example, allow you to stay as much as 30 times longer in the sun than no protection at all.

When buying a sunscreen, do look for brand names. When it comes to applying it, you should know that it is most effective is applied 20 minutes before going outside in the sun. After that, you need to reapply it every 2 hours.

SPF creams protect you against UVB rays, but not UVA rays. To make sure you’re protected from UVA rays as well, look for products containing zinc oxide and titanium oxide.

Vegetables and fruits are also essential if you want to keep your skin healthy. Carrots, apricots, pumpkin and tomatoes are among the foods that provide protection against ultraviolet rays. Orange foods such as the sweet potato is even better for you.

Besides the SPF creams and food, clothing plays an important role in keeping you safe from harm. Do turn to hats, umbrellas and long sleeve shirts if too sunny. And always try keeping yourself in the shade rather than sunbathe.
