The 2016 presidential race has seen two nominees that are both from New York. The Republican candidate Donald J. Trump made his fortune in real estate in New York. The Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton was a New York Senator before her first presidential bid in 2008. Both candidates have a connection with the city that never sleeps. So, Donald J. Trump and Hillary Clinton are going to spend election night in the same city, New York. That raises security concerns and New York security has been elevated in advance of the political event.
The Two Candidates Will Spend Election Night in Manhattan
Donald J. Trump and Hillary Clinton are going to be just a little over a mile apart on election night. Both presidential candidates are going to spend election night in midtown Manhattan, New York. The city is preparing for having the president-elect in Manhattan on election night, whoever the winner of the political contest is going to be.
The Clinton campaign has planned a big bash in an atrium of the Javits convention center. The atrium has a glass roof that is symbolic of the glass ceiling that Hillary Clinton would be breaking, should she become the first female president of the United States. The Trump campaign has made preparations at a Hilton hotel in Manhattan. The hotel is just 15 blocks away from the Javits convention center.
New York City is preparing for election night and the challenge of having both presidential candidates in the city at the same time. New York Police Commissioner James O’Neill gave a statement this Monday.
“Tomorrow, election day, brings with it a unique set of challenges. For the first time in modern memory, both major party candidates will monitor the results here in New York and will have election night parties in midtown Manhattan,’’
said New York Police Commissioner James O’Neill.
Two Presidential Candidates from New York
The Mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio commented on the election and the prerogative of American voters to express their political option.
“It has been in many ways a challenging and painful year. It stained our democracy. Tomorrow is the day when we get to make it right, when democratic process comes alive and people choose,’’
said New York Mayor Bill de Blasio.
The last time two presidential candidates were from New York the year was 1944. The two nominees were Franklin D. Roosevelt and the Governor of New York, Thomas Dewey. At the time, World War II was going on. So, the celebrations were minimal.
Hillary Clinton and her husband, Bill Clinton live in the New York suburb of Chappaqua. They moved there in 1999 so that Hillary Clinton could run for Senator of New York. Donald J. Trump was born in Queens and made his fortune in Manhattan. He lives in a penthouse condominium at the top of Trump Tower in prime real estate on Fifth Avenue.
Election night is going to see a concentration of security forces in New York City. So far, the largest deployment of security was for the visit of Pope Francis last year.
