There are less than two months left until the presidential election. The two candidates are preparing for the debates that are about to start in a week. They’re also on the campaign trail trying to get as much support from voters as possible.
The race is a close one and neither candidate is clearly ahead. At this point endorsements could count for a lot. And the endorsement of a former president is sure to get media attention. But there is one surprise from a former US president regarding who he is going to vote for in the upcoming election.
George H.W. Bush
The Bush family have been quiet lately, without expressing any views about the ongoing campaign. Jeb Bush, one of the sons of the Bush family, was a Republican primaries candidate. Hoping to win the Republican party’s nomination for the presidential election, he ran in the primaries race. He dropped out of the race after not being able to get enough support. And, as we all now, Donald Trump received the nomination to go ahead and be the Republican party candidate for the White House.
The Bush is one of the important political families in America. Two of its members have served as president of the United States, George H.W. Bush and his son, George W. Bush. The 41st president of the United States made the news yesterday even at age 92. A photo on Facebook gave everyone reason to believe that he was not going to vote Republican.
This Monday, former president George H.W. Bush received visitors from the Points of Light Foundation. It is a bipartisan organization and board members were invited to meet Bush Sr. Among them was Kathleen Hartington Kennedy Townsend. She is the daughter of Robert F. Kennedy and served as lieutenant governor for Maryland.
In conversation with Ms. Kennedy Townsend, George H.W. Bush said that he is going to vote for Hillary Clinton. There were 40 people in the room at the time and several have confirmed the statement.
Kathleen Kennedy Townsend took a photo of herself and George H.W. Bush. She posted it to Facebook with the caption: “The President told me he’s voting for Hillary!!”
The Trump Campaign Responds
The news traveled fast on Facebook, making the former president intention to vote for Clinton well-known. Sources close to the Bush family say that this is the first time George H.W. Bush has said anything about voting for Hillary Clinton, the Democratic nominee.
It is a political decision that has stunned everyone. It is rare that a former president publicly rebukes the candidate of his own party.
Kellyanne Conway, Trump’s campaign manager was on CNN yesterday. She said that she has respect fo the former president and the decision that he made. She continued to say that she finds it ironic that he is going to vote for the wife of the man who defeated him in a political race. Kellyanne Conway admitted that it had been “a bruising primary”. She added that she is aware that there are many “hurt feelings”.
