Elon Musk Unveils Tesla Solar Roof

Tesla wants to take its business further and be more than just a car company. The company has just reported quarterly results that exceeded the expectations of analysts. Orders for the Model 3 are around 400,000. There is a good change that they will exceed 500,000 at this rate. But Tesla CEO Elon Musk wants more for the company. Tesla has plans to take over SolarCity and is already making plans to work together. Elon Musk has said that he wants the two companies to be vertically integrated. The car company and the solar panel company would work together to bring about Elon Musk’s vision for the home of the future.

Tesla Solar Roof Is the Next Step

Tesla’s plans for the energy smart home of the future mean a Tesla electric car, solar panel roof tiles and the Powerwall 2. The Tesla products would fit seamlessly with the home, providing an environmentally friendly, virtually free source of energy. The electricity generated by the solar roofing on the house would generate electricity to charge your car and power up your home.

At an event this Friday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled the new Tesla solar roof. The first thing that you notice about the Tesla solar roof is the design. It might be its best asset, technical specifications aside. Solar panels that are go on a house aftermarket tend to look somewhat strange on a home. Making the decision to invest in solar panels and apply them to the roof of your existing house raises the value of the house. But the aesthetic effect of solar panels on a home isn’t exactly pleasing. The solar roof solution from Tesla is different in that the roof is actually made up of solar panels. Instead of applying a solar panel to an existing roof.

The Tesla solar roofing gives you a roof that acts as one big solar panel. Each tile gathers solar energy that will power up your home. But from a distance the solar roof tiles look just like ordinary roof tiles. The solar roofing will be available in four different styles: “Smooth Glass Tile”, “Textured Glass Tile”, “Tuscan Glass Tile” and “Slate Glass Tile”. Each of the styles is supposed to resemble a current style of roofing materials that is available today. The tiles are transparent to solar energy. But, when looked at from an angle, they appear opaque.

Tesla and 3M Work Together to Improve Efficiency

In terms of technical specifications, the Tesla solar roof is almost as good as a conventional solar panel. The current version of the solar roof tiles have a two percent loss when it comes to efficiency. So you can expect to get 98 percent of the output you would get with a regular solar panel. The efficiency is pretty good as it is. But Tesla is working with 3M to improve the coatings of the roof tiles. They are using an idea to trap light within the tile. That would result in less energy loss. This idea could take the roof tiles to above average efficiency.
