Donald Trump Was Heckled at a Charity Event

With just seventeen days until the presidential election and the three presidential debates behind them, the two candidates for the office of President of the United States met in a different setting. Hillary Clinton and Donald J. Trump were both guests at the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner. The charity event took place this Thursday, at the Waldorf Astoria in Manhattan, New York. It is an event that brings the two presidential candidates together towards the end of the presidential campaign. The expectation is that, despite being opponents, the Democratic nominee and the Republican nominee can still be fair and treat each other respectfully. Or, at least, attend the same event.

Donald J. Trump Receives Boos from the Audience

The Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner is a black tie event where it is important to maintain decorum. But Donald J. Trump brought his incendiary rhetoric from the campaign trail with him. This led to a reaction from the other guests of the charity event. During his speech, Donald J. Trump was heckled by the audience.

The two presidential candidates are supposed to meet at the event and be courteous towards one another. Of course, any warmth or exchange of pleasantries is feigned. But it brings an atmosphere of civility to the end of often bitter political campaigns.

However, the Republican candidate didn’t want to miss the opportunity to take a few more swipes at his Democratic opponent. His speech included many of the attacks that he has used against Clinton during the election campaign. Using campaign rally rhetoric and style at the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner in New York did not go down well. Those in attendance reacted candidly and voiced their disagreement with what Trump was saying.

Donald J. Trump Defies the Setting of the Event

The Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner is an event that raises money to benefit Catholic charities. It is a regular event in the life of New York, that both candidates were familiar with. The Republican candidate, Donald J. Trump is a life-long New Yorker who has made a fortune in the real estate business in Manhattan. Hillary Clinton is also familiar with the event and New York society. Before being Secretary of State, she served as a United States Senator for New York from January 3, 2001 to January 21, 2009.

The guests at the charity event come from New York’s elite. This year saw two former New York mayors among the guests. One of them was Michael R. Bloomberg. Also a billionaire like Donald J. Trump is always eager to remind anyone. But a supporter of Hillary Clinton and a critic of the real estate mogul. The other former mayor present at the event was Rudy Giuliani. A supporter of Donald J. Trump, Giuliani has campaigned for the Republican candidate and carried his political message in the press.

Despite speaking in front of a select audience, Donald J. Trump went low during his speech. He insinuated that Hillary Clinton just pretends to like Catholics. He went as far as using the words “so corrupt” to describe his political opponent. Also, Donald J. Trump made a joke that was about Clinton’s potential future in jail under a Trump administration.
